SOUTH African holiday road deaths passed the 636 mark on Tuesday morning, 33 up from Monday’s toll. By the same date last year, 649 people had died in road accidents, according to Arrive Alive.
Arrive Alive said in Pretoria that 460 fatal accidents had been reported by noon on Tuesday, in which 222 passengers, 208 drivers and 206 pedestrians were killed. Pedestrians were involved in 43% of the reported accidents. KwaZulu-Natal still tops the list with 118 fatalities, followed by the Western Cape with 102, Gauteng 86, the Eastern Cape 78, Free State 66, Mpumalanga 64, Northern Province 53, North-West 45 and the Northern Cape 24.
Meanwhile, the SA Blood Transfusion service said it has less than a single day’s blood supplies in stock as a result of the road toll — some 11600 units need to be collected this week.
