THE humanitarian situation in Congo (Brazzaville) is a “forgotten emergency”, according to United Nations assistant co-ordinator for humanitarian affairs, Martin Griffith, who visited the Democratic Republic of Congo, Angola and Congo in January. Battles rage in Congo (Brazzaville) between the army, supported by Angolan troops and President Denis Sassou Nguesso’s Cobra militias on the one hand and, on the other, Ninja and Cocoye militias of former prime minister Bernard Kolelas and deposed president Pascal Lissouba. About 50000 displaced people are in the capital, Brazzaville, living on minimal aid from non-governmental organizations, the UN and the Red Cross. Griffiths also described Angola as an emergency situation in the making, as the war between the government and Unita rebels worsens.
