MOZ ELECTIONS SET FOR OCTOBER

MOZAMBIQUE’S second multiparty elections since its 16-year civil war ended in 1992 have been scheduled for October at a budget of just over $42-million. Almost half of the budget is already allocated to an extensive voter registration campaign which will reregister all potential voters from scratch following allegations by opposition parties — particularly opposition party Renamo — that the 1994 voters’ roll was flawed. The European Union has pledged $23-million while $10-million has been promised by the United Nations Development Programme. The budget does not include government campaign funds granted to all political parties.
