ZAMBIA BEATS MALAWI

ZAMBIA beat Malawi 1-0 in the opening group B match of the 11th Africa Under-20 football championship played at the Kumasi Sports Stadium in Kumasi on Monday. The Zambians owe their victory to midfielder Stephen Kabwe, who tied the defence into a knot, and crossed from the right for substitute Lundu Ezzie to head the ball into the net — only 10 minutes before the end of the game. Tactically superior, the Zambians never allowed their opponents enough room to manoeuvre as they pinned them to the wall. They failed to score in the fifth minute after they had kicked-off as striker Makfi Barnard, who broke loose, hit the side-post from close range. Zambia’s persistent attacks paid off when substitute Lundu Ezzie put them ahead in the 80th minute.
