BIENNIAL WORLD CUP ON HOLD

EUROPEAN soccer’s governing body, Uefa, forced Fifa president Sepp Blatter to back down on his plan to stage the World Cup every two years on Wednesday – but both sides have not ruled it out in the long term. “We have 10 years to discuss this project. Before then it will not be an actuality,” said Uefa president Lennart Johansson. Said Blatter: “I will not bring this idea now to the [international ruling body] Fifa executive committee or the congress to a vote before we have international calendar.” These latest developments seem unlikely to affect the bidding process for the 2006 World Cup, which South Africa is vying to host.
