TOYOTA BACK AT WORK

NATIONAL Union of Metalworkers of South Africa members ended a nine-day strike at Toyota’s Durban plant on Thursday, returning to work while Numsa continues negotiations. SABC radio reports that this follows management’s threat to dismiss workers if they continue with the illegal strike. Some 1500 workers have been on strike since February 26 despite a March 2 Labour Court order that they return to work. The workers are demanding bonus payments, which Toyota says it cannot meet after it failed to reach 1998 profit targets in a depressed car market.
