TOOTHFISH ALERT

MAURITIAN authorities are to search a Spanish-owned fishing vessel suspected of fishing illegally for the rare Patagonian Toothfish. Greenpeace has accused the “Salvora” which arrived Tuesday in Port Louis, of fishing for toothfish off the French-ruled Kerguelen islands in the far south of the Indian Ocean in what is an exclusive French economic zone.French ambassador to Mauritius, Rene Forceville said on Tuesday he met Mauritian Fisheries Minister Dan Beeharry last week, accompanied by an Australian diplomat, to ask Mauritius to search the Salvora which was intercepted by Australia at the beginning of the year. The Mauritian minister had promised to provide the required assistance, he said. A spokesperson for the Belize-registered Salvora denies there has been any wrongdoing.
