SIX of the nine remaining untrained Tuli young elephants were moved on Thursday to a North-West game park, SABC radio news reports. The transfer of the animals to Sandhurst Safaris follows signature of an agreement between their owner Riccardo Ghiazza and the National Council of Societies for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. The transfer is a temporary measure in response to a court challenge by Ghiazza to an earlier court order placing the elephants in the custody of the NSPCA. Ghiazza intends that the animals should remain at Sandhurst for about six months, during which time they will not be trained. However, he plans to return them to his farm near Brits for training once recently drafted elephant training guidelines have been submitted to the relevant authorities for approval.
