SOUTH Africa’s black professional golfers meet on Freedom Day next Tuesday to hear the Southern Africa Tour’s response to their grievances with the structure of the game in the country. Tour tournament director Theo Manyama, once one of its leading black players, will announce the Tour’s answer to the request for a doubling of the number of black tournament exemptions from five to 10. The black players want a return to the figure agreed at the 1990 unification talks between the then all-white South African PGA and the black Tournament Professionals’ Association. The issue erupted when veteran black professional Vincent Tshabalala accused the Tour of “anti-black sentiment” earlier in the year and demanded the reinstatement of the 10 exemptions. Tshabalala has warned of another breakaway from the Southern Africa Tour.
