TEACHERS WIN REPRIEVE

SOME 4700 temporary teachers in the Northern Province, due to be axed at the end of the month, won a short reprieve on Friday when the provincial education department said their contracts will be extended by two months. The teachers were hired from July 1996. Education spokesman Bernard Matsane said, however, the department will uphold its decision to pay off the teachers, since it is rationalising and redeploying its full-time teaching staff.
