TWO-THIRDS LIKELY

THE African National Congress appears headed for a two-thirds majority and is likely to capture at least eight of the country’s nine provinces, the latest opinion poll revealed on Monday. Election 99, a survey conducted by the Institute for a Democratic South Africa, Markinor and the SABC, found that a low voter turnout on election day (around 73%) could result in the ANC receiving as much as 69% of the vote, while a 98% turnout could leave it with 66% support. The survey found that the Western Cape was the only hotly contested province, with the leadership battle between the ANC and the New National Party set for a “photo finish”. Combined support for opposition parties has dropped by five percentage points since the last survey in February/March this year.
