MPUMA FINANCE HEAD DODGES PROVINCE’S TAXES

AN arrest warrant has been issued for Mpumalanga’s controversial finance head, Sam Cronje, after he failed to explain why the province has dodged its R65-million income tax bill over the past three-years. Cronje was supposed to appear in the Nelspruit district court last week Thursday to explain why the provincial administration failed to submit its IRP5 tax returns and tax deductions since 1996. The South African Revenue Services accuses Mpumalanga of failing to submit the documents to hide the fact that it failed to pay over an estimated R65-million deducted from the province’s 50000 civil servants. Cronje, who has previously refused to answer questions on the issue in legislature, failed to appear in court. Departmental officials said Cronje had taken advantage of an error on the court summons, which used an incorrect ID number for Cronje, to avoid appearing in the dock.
