CIVIL servants in the Democratic Republic of Congo on Wednesday called off their strike, which began on August 2, following an agreement signed on Tuesday between the government and the umbrella body representing civil service trade unions. According to the agreement, the government pledged to convene “without delay” a meeting with the unions to discuss the plight of the civil servants. The government also pledged to pay all salary arrears owed civil servants in the provinces as soon as possible. Civil servants were demanding salary increases of between $150 and $800.
