Nepal honours Nelson Mandela

Nepal is honouring former president Nelson Mandela with an award dedicated to the memory of a Nepalese revolutionary.

Mandela would be given the Ganesh Man Singh Trust Award, instituted in memory of Nepal’s revolutionary and democracy fighter Singh, who died in 1997 at the age of 84. The honour also carries a purse of 10000 US dollars.

The decision was made by the trust at a meeting presided over by Prime Minister Krishna Prasad Bhattarai, himself a former revolutionary and a life-long colleague of the late Singh.

Singh fought for 50 years against authoritarian regimes, from military oligarchs to the oppressive government of the anti-democracy panchayat system. Bhattarai has formally invited Mandela to come to Nepal at his convenience to receive the award.
