NATIONAL police commissioner George Fivaz on Saturday disputed the findings of a recent report on crime, saying they “unfairly portray the SAPS” in a poor light. Fivas was reacting to a produced by the Institute for Security Studies that said that, of the crimes reported to the police, only a few result in the apprehension and prosecution of a suspect. Crime does pay, it concluded. In his response, Fivaz criticised the report for only focusing on the reactive side of policing and ignoring the successes gained through proactive policing “Many examples can be found in the successes achieved in our fight against narcotics and criminal syndicates,” Fivaz said.
