BRENDA FASSIE and Nigerian star Femi Kuti were late on Saturday night pronounced Africa’s best female and best male performers at the 1999 Kora All Africa Music Awards at Sun City, northwest of Johannesburg. The artists, and a spread of others from across the continent, received their awards at a glittering ceremony attended by about 3000 people including former president Nelson Mandela and pop star Michael Jackson. Jackson used the occasion to present the ex-president with a cheque for R1-million, collected with fellow musicians at a recent concert in Tokyo, for the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund, an organiser said.
