ANGOLAN government troops have seized back control of the southern town of Kuvango from Unita rebels, the military said on Monday as other sources reported battles in the north. The army said it took Kuvango at the weekend, without giving casualty figures, while independent sources said that heavy fighting meanwhile took place around Jamba-Mineira and at Dongo in the same province, Huila. Thousands of civilians had fled in the past week, the independent sources said. Clashes were under way on Monday in the northeastern Uige province, according to informed sources in the capital Luanda, who added that about 8,000 civilians had fled fighting in that region. Aid agencies have warned of a dire humanitarian situation in many parts of Angola, where renewed war between the Unita and Luanda flared up in November last year.
