ROBBEN Island and two other heritage treasures are likely to be declared World Heritage Sites by Unesco in December, Environmental Affairs Minister Valli Moosa said on Wednesday. Moosa told parliament he is confident that Unesco will award Robben Island, the pristine St Lucia Wetlands on the east coast and the Sterkfontein hominid sites “their rightful status in the world alongside the Acropolis, the Grand Canyon and Greater Zimbabwe.” He was introducing to the National Assembly the World Heritage Convention Bill, which provides a framework for managing world heritage sites in South Africa.
