THE Cape rugby club involved in a brawl in which several people were assaulted, one seriously, has been fined R5000 and suspended indefinitely. Paarl Rangers fans allegedly assaulted Herman Abrahams, the manager of club rugby in the WPRFU, and two referees, Theuns Griebenow and Michael Vermeulen after a match on 18 September between Rangers and Kuilsrivier. The Western Province Rugby Football Union Disciplinary Committee met at Newlands on Tuesday for a hearing into the incident. “Paarl Rangers RFC’s officials were unable to name the parties guilty of the assaults,” a WPRFU statement issued on Tuesday said. “The club was found guilty and it was decided to impose a R5000 fine and to suspend Paarl Rangers RFC indefinitely. Paarl Rangers have also been instructed to institute effective crowd control.
