ANCIENT REMAINS FOUND IN CAPE

AN ancient skeleton, thought to be of the San people, has been found by an archaeologist at Melkbosstrand, on the Cape west coast, the Cape Times reported on Thursday. The skeleton, thought to be between 500 and 1000 years old, was found in an old sand dune due to be flattened for the development of a new central business district. Tiny beads, a stone tool and a stone pendant were found with the remains. The bones of the skeleton will be chemically analysed, which could give archaeologists an idea of whether the prehistoric people’s diet consisted mainly of seafood or land animals. Two weeks ago, four other prehistoric skeletons were unearthed by bulldozers excavating the post office site for Melkbosstrand. However the context of their burial was destroyed and archaeologically valuable information lost.
