BUSINESS, LABOUR BACK CCMA

STAKEHOLDERS in the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration on Monday reaffirmed their support for the commission which has been rocked by allegations of racism and financial mismanagement. A joint statement by the Department of Labour, the Congress of South African Trade Unions, Business South Africa and the National Council of Trade Unions said the CCMA is a quality dispute resolution services that has “assisted significantly in resolving very protracted and difficult strikes and serious forms of industrial conflict”. Last week the CCMA’s staff association (CSA) called for the dismissal of the commission’s director, Thandi Orleyn. The association accused Orleyn of financial mismanagement and abuse of power. It also claimed that racism was rife because white commissioners were being promoted faster than their black counterparts.
