PAUL van Vuuren, a former security police member to whom the Truth and Reconciliation Commission granted amnesty for political murders, appeared in the Warmbaths Magistrate’s Court on Friday after he allegedly sjambokked a seven-year-old black boy for kissing his daughter. Northern Province police confirmed that Van Vuuren had been charged with assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm. He was not asked to plead. Seven-year-old Paul Kekae is the son of a farmworker who had been in Van Vuuren’s employ for 15 years, according to a report in Beeld newspaper. Van Vuuren was remanded to November 26.
