THE country’s mainstream media came under fire on Monday in an interim report of an inquiry by the South African Human Rights Commission into racism in the media. Addressing a conference, in Johannesburg on Monday, SAHRC chairman Barney Pityana said preliminary investigation reveal that certain parts of the media are still fostering discrimination. He said the findings are firm enough to warrant a full investigation. The inquiry began last November and the commission hopes to make its final findings available in January next year, Pitayana said. The original complaints to the SAHRC were laid by the Association of Black Accountants and the Black Lawyers Association which accused the Mail & Guardian and the Sunday Times of “subliminal” racism. The commission opted to hold a general inquiry into racism in the media.
