NIGERIA LOSES KEY DEFENDER

KEY defender Emeka Ifejiagwa has dropped out of Nigeria’s African Nations’ Cup squad because of a knee injury. Nigeria have asked the Confederation of African Football for permission to replace him. Ifejiagwa, with Spanish second division Osasuna, had been in Nigeria’s squad of 22 for the 16-nation finals, starting on Saturday. Juventus midfielder Sunday Oliseh was named Nigeria captain following Daniel Amokachi’s failure to make the squad. “Oliseh is polished, disciplined and intelligent. We believe he can lead the team and all the players respect him,” said the Nigerian F.A. Oliseh made his debut in 1993 and played in the 1994 and 1998 World Cups. He was in the 1994 Nations’ Cup-winning team and 1996 Olympic title side. He stopped playing for his country in August 1998 but was later persuaded to change his mind.
