ALLEGED TOLL ROAD RAPISTS ARRESTED

NORTHERN Province police believe they have made a breakthrough into a spate of armed robberies and rapes against foreigners on the N1 toll road. Far North police spokesman Captain Ailwei Mushavhanamadi said on Tuesday three suspects were arrested last Thursday, and the fourth was picked up on Monday night. He said the robbers used a blue light on a van or bakkie to stop travellers, and wore police uniforms. The gang targeted only people from neighbouring countries, stopping heavily laden vehicles heading for the Beit Bridge border post with Zimbabwe. Mushavhanamadi said police allegedly recovered goods worth R25000, stolen from people from Zambia, Zimbabwe and Malawi, when they arrested the first three suspects. Mushavhanamadi said the attackers had frequently raped women in front of their husbands.
