FORMER world kick-boxing champion Mike Bernardo will be contesting the WBF heavyweight world title on March 19 in Las Vegas. Bernado, who has taken a break from Thai boxing to concentrate on the more lucrative square ring sport, stopped US fighter Scott Conner in the second round of an elimination tournament earlier this year. Bernardo, similarly to Francois Botha before him, never impressed much as a boxer in local rings, but has caught the attention of US audiences. He will be facing the tough 6’6″ Keith McKnight in a contest which promises to be a bruising affair. Lauded for their power punching, neither boxer is known for their finesse in the ring, so chances are good that this bout will not go the distance. As with the elimination tournament, this bout will also be screened live on ESPN. The WBF is one of the lesser respected world titles, but with the backing of a television network, the winner of this version of the heavyweight world title is sure to cash in. Come fight-night South Africa may find itself with two heavyweight world champions.
