Soccer boss Ndhlela axed

OWN CORRESPONDENT, Cape Town | Tuesday 6.30am.

JOE Ndhlela, Chief executive officer of the Premier Soccer League, was dismissed from his post on Tuesday after a Board of Governors meeting held in Johannesburg.

Ndhlela was suspended on December 1 for bringing football and the league into disrepute after he was arrested on charges of fraud and corruption related to his employ at Transnet.

Ndhlela was the subject of an internal probe to irregularities within the Premier Soccer League before his arrest on the Transnet charges, and appeared before a tribunal in February to face a number charges including buying suits worth 1,3-million for players in the PSL.

The PSL was invoiced for R1364580 while only R682290 was allegedly paid for the suits.

Ndhela was also charged with contacting a consulting agency to evaluate the League’s staff without the board of governors’ authority, and paying R700000 for the evaluation to an individual and not the agency itself.

He was also charged with committing the League to a contractual agreement with a management and production company without the board’s approval — resulting in the PSL being indebted to the tune of R28000.

Ndhlela was furthermore charged with making unauthorised payments on behalf of family members and others using an American Express card, as well as failing to make full disclosure regarding the termination of his services by Transnet for alleged financial misappropriation.

On Tuesday the board of governors were called to make a decision on whether to dismiss or reinstate Ndhlela, and after deliberation the decision was taken to fire him.
