Cosatu calls for new jobs summit

OWN CORRESPONDENT, Johannesburg | Thursday 5.00pm.

THE Congress of South African Trade Unions has stepped up its campaign against joblessness and called for high level discussions between labour, government and business to reduce unemployment in South Africa.

The call comes after a two-day meeting of Cosatu’s central executive committee which ended on Wednesday.

Cosatu general secretary Zwelinzima Vavi said the discussions will take place under the auspices of mediation body, Nedlac, and will be similar to the Codesa negotiations.

He said short and long term solutions to the unemployment crisis must be found.

Sacob has undertaken to send a senior delegation to the talks.

“It is important for business to send their senior decision makers to meet with us because the decisions made must be implemented quickly,” Vavi said.

No date for the summit has yet been set.
