A POWERFUL earthquake measuring 6.6 on the Richter scale has rocked south-western Tanzania, but there have been no reports of casualties. Police said there were three tremors in the space of 10 minutes which opened up cracks in some buildings. ”The first one was very, very big. My bed was shaking. I got out of the house to see if there was any damage, but everything was okay,” said a policeman. Tremors were also felt in northern Tanzania, close to Lake Victoria. To the south in Zambia, scores of village huts were damaged and trees uprooted across the country’s northern copper-mining belt. The quake is thought to be the most powerful felt in the region since 1910, but the University of Dar es Salaam, responsible for monitoring earthquakes in Tanzania, said it would only get complete data in a month’s time. – Reuters
