An ode to joy

Now in its sixth season and firmly ensconced as one of the fashion musts in the country, the Durban Designer Emporium (DDE) Summer Collections 2001 happens this year under the title Joy.

A British Council initiative with DDE, it takes place in Durban on November 11.

Hot on the heels of South Africa and London’s Fashion Week, the DDE Summer Collections 2001 is a tribute to the fun and eclectic swing of the fashion pendulum which is now described as dead, glamorous and sexy.

Joy will feature creations by new designers and DDE founding members Colleen Eitzen and Amanda Laird Cherry and a guest range by Gideon, along with other Durban designers Catherine Dean, Loshini Naidoo, Holmes, ALC, Mariana, Chelle and Theunis Nel. A major scoop for the event is the guest collection by Patrick Thomson, a popular London designer whose garments have just come off London Fashion Week’s catwalk.

Thomson’s visit forms part of the British Council’s British Fashion in South Africa Project.

The Joy collections will be seen on the stage of the Playhouse Opera with audiences seated in the wings. Mark Hawkins, artistic director of Durban’s Fantastic Flying Fish Dance Company, will provide the direction.

There are only two showings on Saturday November 11 at 6.30pm and 9pm with a party after the late show.

The rather startling look (left) on model Andrew has been created for the event by newcomer Eric Robinson.

Tickets may be purchased at 77 Musgrave Road, Durban. For information Tel: (031) 201 2783 or visit www.dde.co.za
