ZIM STARTS COMPENSATING FARMERS

THE Zimbabwe government has begun paying out compensation for farm structures to white commercial farmers whose land it has seized to resettle poor blacks, a state-run Sunday Mail paper said. The farmers are receiving compensation only for improvements to the farms, not for the land itself, the newspaper said. The government wants to take five million hectares of white-owned land to resettle poor blacks on, but farmers have mounted legal challenges, with the Supreme Court ruling that the land reform programme is unconstitutional. – AFP
