BRITAIN should re-use old graves to create more space and raise more cash for overcrowded, run-down graveyards, a report by members of parliament said. Authorities have let cemeteries get in such a state as to “shame all society” and if the public are to have affordable, accessible burial there is no alternative but to dig up remains, bury them deeper, and re-use graves, the report by the Environment, Transport and Regional Affairs Committee said. Some graveyard administrators have suggested digging up remains after a period of about 75 years and burying up to five bodies on top of the re-interred remains. The report met resistance from some Jewish leaders who said re-using graves went against their religious doctrine.
