HOPES began to fade on Tuesday for the recovery of the bodies of about 70 passengers of two buses which collided and plunged into the swollen waters of a Kenyan river at the weekend. The recovery operation by police and navy divers using ropes and earth-movers was hampered by lack of adequate lifting equipment and by the volume of mud carried by the Sabaki river. Both vehicles ploughed through the bridge’s railing on Sunday afternoon after one rammed the other, which had slowed to allow an oncoming truck to pass a stationary Land Rover full of tourists taking photographs, according to witnesses. – AFP
