REBELS in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) have withdrawn a monopoly on exports of coltan, an expensive mineral used in the fabrication of high-tech products, granted to a sole mining firm. An official in the Rwandan-backed Congolese Rally for Democracy (RCD), who asked not to be named, said that the Great Lakes Mining Company (SOMIGL) had seen the monopoly withdrawn a week ago. Coltan, a compound used in defence and aerospace industries, as well as in manufacturing mobile telephones, sells in Goma for between $100 and $200 dollars per kg. – AFP
