Thousands homeless after Boland blaze

Thousands of people were left homeless when 600 shacks were destroyed by fire at the Grabouw informal settlement in the Boland on Sunday.

Western Cape disaster management representative Jan Bosman said the fire which started after midnight on Saturday was brought under control just after 2am.

Bosman said about 2 500 people were affected by the disaster but there were no casualties or injuries.

Western Cape local government MEC Cobus Dowry visited the area on Sunday morning to assess the damage.

The province’s disaster management team was co-ordinating relief measures in collaboration with the provincial social services department, Bosman said.

Cape Town city management had provided ten tents for emergency care for the elderly and babies and the Salvation Army was providing food and blankets for those made homeless by the fire.

Bosman said there was still a desperate need for infant formula and baby food and called on the people of the Western Cape to assist the Salvation Army in this regard. – Sapa
