AT least 13 people died when a river ferry carrying a truck turned over in eastern Senegal, emergency services said on Sunday. An undetermined number of people were also missing from the tragedy, which occurred on Saturday night in Fongolomby in the region of Kedougou, a correspondent for Walf-FM radio reported from the region. Emergency services rescued 11 people and also pulled the truck from the river. “It is difficult to determine the number of missing, as we don’t know how many people were on board,” said a source in the emergency services, which were continuing operations on Sunday night. The source said 13 people on board the ferry had drowned. Walf-FM said a number of bodies recovered were “unrecognisable.” The radio quoted a senior crew member as saying the accident had been “predictable,” and blamed the “decrepit” state of the boat for the tragedy. – AFP
