The South African men’s hockey team preparations for the Commonwealth Games to be held in July in Manchester got off to a great start when the boys beat Spain 3-1 last Sunday in Randburg.
On Tuesday they continued to make the nation proud in the five-match series when they came back from a 2-0 deficit to make it 3-2 against the Spaniards.
One of the South African players, Greg Nicol, who scored twice during the game ensured his name was written in the history books of hockey as he became the only player in the country to score 200 international goals.
Spain kept the series alive with a 4-1 victory on Wednesday.
Coach Rob Pullen said before the start of the series that the results will reflect on their efforts of rebuilding and refocusing the team towards the Commonwealth Games.
The results bode well for South Africa’s preparations for the big tournament in Manchester. The South Africans are focusing on their style of play.
After the series ends on June 30 in Randburg the South African players will return to their home provinces, but will be given individual training schedules so they can keep in trim.
In Manchester, South Africa will play against Australia, New Zealand and Barbados in their group, while the other group has Pakistan, England, Canada and Wales.
