Minnaar involved in assassination probe

Tai Minnaar is the man who, before his death, worked with private investigator Ponnie van Vuuren on a commercial investigation of the 1986 assassination of Swedish prime minister Olof Palme.

Their findings made front-page headlines in the Swedish and South African press when extracts of documents, alleged to have originated from South African military intelligence, were published.

Van Vuuren, a former navy officer, has been paid R400 000 so far for his work on the Palme murder, which was long suspected to have a South African involvement.

He is apparently in dispute with the Swedish businessman who bankrolled the investigation and says he is owed another R600 000.

The documents purport to identify Roy Allen as the alleged shooter, sent to Sweden to carry out the hit.

Allen, who served in the South African Police and later in Military Intelligence, now lives in Perth, Australia.

He was also at one time a suspect in the unsolved murder of Dr Robert Smit.

In an interview with Beeld newspaper on Tuesday, Allen denied involvement in either incident and stated he had never been to Sweden.
