Stoppage at SA’s Implats over, miners back at work

Almost all of the miners that embarked on a nine-day work stoppage at world number two platinum miner Impala Platinum (Implats, IMP) have returned to work on the Sunday night shift, Implats general manager of operations Gert Ackerman told I-Net Bridge on Monday.

“All the workers have reported to work from the night shift on Sunday, which began at 2100, and the Monday morning shift, which began at 0600 today. The mines are back to normal,” Ackerman said.

Implats has 28 000 employees at operations on the Impala Lease Area and about 18 000 embarked on the work stoppage. The company is going to try to make up some of the production of 35 150 ounces of platinum lost as a result of the stoppage.

The strike resulted in a loss in revenue of about R265-million and a loss of about R139-million in attributable income (or net profit).
