President Thabo Mbeki will depart for Maputo later on Wednesday to attend the African Union (AU) summit and the Nepad Heads of States Implementation Committee meeting.
Foreign Affairs spokesperson Ronnie Mamoepa said the Nepad (New Partnership for Africa’s Development) meeting would prepare a report on the progress of Nepad’s implementation.
It would review the status of the body’s secretariat based in South Africa.
On Thursday, Mbeki would attend the Second Ordinary Session of the AU Summit of Heads of State and Governments, which would close on Saturday.
He will also hand chairmanship of the AU over to Mozambican President Joachim Chissano.
The summit would discuss the 10 conflict areas on the continent, including the Central African Republic, which has been barred from the meeting because its current government came to power through a coup that toppled Ange-Felix Patasse, a democratically elected president, in March.
The other areas of concern include Somalia, Sudan, Angola, the Central African Republic, Liberia and Cote d’Ivoire. – Sapa
