The annual Nat Nakasa Award celebrates integrity, fearlessness, courage and determination by journalists in the face of obstacles.
This year the judges awarded a ”special mention” to Mail & Guardian education reporter David Macfarlane for a number of articles uncovering frau-dulent activities by highly respected academics.
”Macfarlane looks beyond the obvious and interrogates education issues. His reportage asks the pertinent question about what policies and actions mean for the poor and the marginalised, the people who should be benefiting from these,” said Mondli Makhanya, editor of the M&G.
”It is heartening that the award recognises the crucial significance of education,” Macfarlane said.
Debbie Yazbek, The Star’s chief photographer, is the winner of this year’s Nat Nakasa Award.
