Deputy Home Affairs Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula is the new president of the African National Congress Women’s League.
Mapisa-Nqakula won with 1 454 votes, beating outgoing acting president Thandi Modise by 528 votes, electoral commissioner Makhosazana Njobe announced on Friday.
The announcement was made at Nasrec, south of Johannesburg where the league is holding its fourth national conference.
As the electoral commission walked into the conference hall to announce the results, Mapisa-Nqakula was surrounded by delegates congratulating her.
Njobe said 2 029 people voted and 2 030 ballot papers had been submitted.
”The only explanation for an extra ballot paper is that one person got two ballot papers.”
She did not speak after her election, but officials said she would address a media conference on the last day of the conference — Sunday.
Mapisa-Nqakula is a rising star who was an ANC parliamentary intelligence standing committee chairperson. She was also elected ANC chief whip in parliament after Tony Yengeni was charged with corruption and shortly after she was appointed to her current position.
Voting for the deputy president of the league takes place on Saturday. — Sapa
