Zuma has no plans to resign

Despite promising on Monday that he would announce a plan of action before the end of the week, Deputy President Jacob Zuma seems to be nowhere nearer doing that.

SABC TV news reported on Friday that at a community meeting in Ingwavuma in northern KwaZulu-Natal, Zuma said he would not give in to pressure to resign.

He has been dogged this week by allegations against him, further details of which emerged in a charge sheet for Durban businessman Schabir Shaik.

The State alleges Shaik paid Zuma nearly R1,2-million between 1995 and 2002 and took elaborate steps to hide some of the payments.

Zuma was met by a fiery reception from a group of Inkatha Freedom Party supporters. They were protesting against Zuma’s friendship with Shaik.

The deputy president was in Ingwavuma to report back to the community about service delivery, but was instead drawn into the controversy surrounding him. — Sapa
