The African National Congress in the Western Cape is in the process of lodging complaints with the Human Rights Commission and the City of Cape Town following allegations of racism against two Democratic Alliance councillors.
Said ANC spokesperson Gert Witbooi: ”This racism from the DA is completely outrageous and unacceptable.”
Witbooi said the first incident involved Charlotte Tabischer, DA councillor for the Kewtown/Athlone constituency.
Tabischer allegedly told the Barends couple at a registration point that they shouldn’t ”vote for the kaffirs”.
Freddie Barends confirmed to Sapa on Tuesday evening that he had laid a complaint of crimen injuria with the Athlone police station on Monday.
”I don’t want to go into it all the time … it is just too much”, said Barends when asked for details.
Witbooi said the second incident was ”even worse” and allegedly involved Bellville South DA councillor Ursula Johnson.
Johnson allegedly verbally abused ANC members at a voter registration table on Sunday when she allegedly said; ”why are you voting for the kaffirs?”
She allegedly also said: ”You are voting for the kaffir president, who sits on his arse travelling around”, in allusion to Mbeki’s international travel.
Bellville South ANC branch secretary Anthony Daniels confirmed that the main deponent of the affidavit laid a complaint with two supporting witnesses on Sunday.
DA unicity caucus leader Danny De la Cruz confirmed on Tuesday evening that the DA was investigating Tabischer, but pleaded ignorance in the Johnson matter.
”Tabischer allegedly uttered certain derogatory words, including the k-word”, he said.
De la Cruz said the Johnson matter had not been brought to the party’s attention yet.
He said the DA ”most definitely” did not condone this type of behaviour and would take the necessary action against any of the two members if found guilty. – Sapa
