Makhaya Ntini became the first South African cricketer since Allan Donald in 1998 to be the world’s leading wicket-taker after edging out Stuart MacGill for the honour at Kingsmead on Monday.
Ntini wrapped up the West Indies tail to claim an innings victory for South Africa inside four days as well as end the year on 59 wickets, two ahead of Australian leg spinner MacGill.
Ntini took three for 72 on Monday to go with his first-innings haul of five for 66.
Whenever it was brought to Ntini’s attention that the honour was within reach, he replied that it was not his main priority.
”I’ve set my own targets,” he explained. ”What happens in Australia [where MacGill is playing against India] does not really concern me.
”I just want to do the basics well and hopefully the wickets will follow.”
While the achievement did not seem to excite Ntini terribly, his skipper, Graeme Smith, seemed happier on his behalf.
”I think it’s terrific,” said Smith after South Africa had taken a 2-0 lead in the four-match series.
”We’re all so proud of Makhaya. What’s impressive is that Makhaya has bowled on different pitches all over the world this year.
”He’s worked so hard to adjust and change his line. Makhaya really deserves it.”
