Meyer withdraws as Bok coach candidate

Blue Bulls and Currie Cup champion coach Heyneke Meyer decided on Wednesday to withdraw as a candidate for Springbok rugby coach.

”After thorough consideration, I have decided to withdraw as one of the four candidates for the position as Springbok coach,” said Meyer. ”It was truly an honour to be nominated as one of the possible candidates as Springbok coach and I would like to thank Brian van Rooyen and his board of directors entrusting me with the nomination.

”To coach the Springboks is a privilege and I am thankful and humble that SA Rugby placed me in such a high category.”

Meyer said that he was available to assist Springbok rugby in any way possible other than coach.

”I would like to give my unconditional support to SA Rugby, Sarfu [the South African Rugby Football Union], the new coach and his structures,” he said.

”It will certainly be an honour and privilege to play a role in the revival of Springbok rugby, [the] transformation and the development of players. If everyone in South Africa has a common goal to be the best, I certainly see a very rosy future for South African rugby.

”My announcement is done well in advance of the selection process in order to give all role players the opportunity to make any adjustments, if necessary.

”Finally, I would like to thank my supporters and employer for their loyalty, faith, trust and support.” — Sapa
