ANC wins by-election in Gugs

The African National Congress in the Western Cape has won Wednesday’s ward 42 by-election in Guguletu with an 86% majority.

The Independent Electoral Commission spokesperson, Courtney Sampson, confirmed the result on Thursday morning. The only other party that contested the poll was the Pan Africanist Congress.

”Preliminary results from all voting stations in ward 42 last night showed that the ANC achieved an 86% majority over the Pan Africanist Congress candidate,” the ANC said in a statement.

”The ANC’s Nomsa Ndandani obtained 2 867 votes defeating the PAC’s Nonceba Makinana who received 403 votes. There were 37 spoilt ballots.”

The by-election was held after ANC ward councillor Tony Gocini died in December last year.

ANC provincial secretary Mcebisi Skwatsha said: ”This victory is a fitting tribute to the late comrade Gocini. It shows that the ANC has consolidated its support in ward 42 and that voters are prepared to put their trust in our organisation.

”Our work in the ward, which included registration of new voters and door to door canvassing, has paid off. We are confident that our newest ANC councillor in the province, Nomsa Ndandani, will work with her comrades in the city to fight poverty and create work in ward 42.” – Sapa
