Strike threat at AngloPlat refinery

Solidarity and the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) on Friday handed over a memorandum to Anglo Platinum management at its base metals refinery in Rustenburg.

AngloPlat spokesperson Mike Mtakati confirmed that the group had received a memorandum from employees at its Rustenburg refinery.

“The memorandum dealt with incentive bonuses, hours of work, protection services and different contracts of employment. There has been no loss of production as a result of the handing over of the memorandum,” Mtakati added.

AngloPlat ignored an agreement that was signed with the unions earlier this year and decided to implement a bonus of 18% instead of the agreed upon 30%, Solidarity said.

“We have already filed a dispute against the management of the refinery. All we ask of management is to adhere to the agreement reached with the trade unions. However, if they are still unwilling to keep to the agreement, we will continue with protest action,” said Solidarity spokesperson Dirk Hermann.

No NUM spokesperson was immediately available to comment on the matter.

At 10.10am, AngloPlat was quoted at R231, down three rand or 1,3% from Friday’s close on the JSE Securities Exchange South Africa. – I-Net Bridge
