A small crowd followed sheriffs through Protea Glen in Soweto on Tuesday afternoon protesting against the eviction of residents from their houses.
There were sporadic scuffles and at one house the crowd threw stones, a Sapa photographer reported.
Police in armoured vehicles, who were escorting the sheriffs, kept the situation under control without firing shots, Soweto police spokesperson Captain Mbazima Shiburi said.
All over the suburb small groups of people were toyi-toying on the streets and some roads were blocked by rocks.
Earlier police dispersed a group of about 200 protesters who were blocking streets and throwing stones. They arrested four people.
Shiburi said the sheriffs — or ”red ants” — were evicting people from their houses following a court order.
He said he did not know the reasons for the evictions, or the number of people to be evicted. — Sapa
