Dull draw for Supersport, Wits

If Supersport United and Wits University played all night they probably would had failed to find the back of the net.

As a result the disappointing opening Castle Premiership match for both these so-called top sides resulted in a damp squib with neither side scoring in a boring 0-0 draw.

The highlight of the match came in the 77th minute when Wits captain and midfield general Charles Yohane was sent off for a second bookable offence.

But worse was to follow in the dying minutes when Wits coach Roger de Sa was sent off by referee Abdul Ibrahim.

There was little for the handful of supporters in the sparse, 400-strong crowd to enthuse over in a dull first half in which the Students just about edged.

United looked disjointed and failed to get in a decent shot at the Wits goal during the first half.

Wits at least were prepared to go forward and try to rescue this match out of mediocrity. Twice within the space of two minutes United ‘keeper Calvin Marlin came to his side’s rescue from the same Wits player, Jonathan Solomons.

Marlin did well to deny Wits’ new signing a goal in the 36th minute with a good save and two minutes later the classy United ‘keeper had to dive full stretch to keep the young Wits wing from netting on debut after Solomons had received a telling cross from teammate Etienne Bito’o.

After Yohane was given his marching orders, United tried to press home their advantage.

It took a stunning save from Wits ‘keeper Wayne Roberts to deny United striker Abram Raselemane a goal in the 86th minute.

The Bafana Bafana striker did well to latch on to Phil Evans through ball but Roberts was up to the challenge with a top-drawer save. — Sapa
